As humanity plans to expand further into outer space, significant issues related to sovereignty, territory and international law must be addressed. This chapter examines these issues, looking, in particular, at the conceptualisation of outer space as a commons and what actors may or may not be able to make territorial claims. It questions whether contemporary notions of sovereignty are adequate to understand and govern politics in outer space
