Piper is the largest genus of the familia Piperaceae with more than 1000 species. This plant is widely used and has high commercial value because of its essential oil contents. Essential oils are plant secondary metabolites which is volatile and aromatic. The difference in essential oil contents in plants has contributed to its taxonomic position. In the previous study there are differences in the essential oils profile of 10 Piper species both qualitatively and quantitatively. However, the materials used in this study are not from plants of the same age, thus its variation in the essential oils profile might not be caused by genetic factors. This study was conducted to compare the essential oils profile on the stalks of 8 Piper species collections of biological garden acclimated from Kebun Raya Bogor both qualitatively and quantitatively, and to analyze the role of essential oils profile of 8 Piper species in taxonomy. The method used is GC-MS (gas chromatohraphy-mass spectrometry) analysis of petroleum ether extract of the stalks of 8 Piper species. Results were analyzed descriptively and showed that there are differences in the essential oil contents in Piper. Based on statistical analysis of UPGMA and PCA, 8 Piper species can be classified into three groups fused at similarity index of 0.025 with 21 compounds as the basis for grouping. In conclusion, there are differences in the profile of the essential oil of 8 Piper species both qualitatively and quantitatively and essential oils has some potential as biomarker
