Piper is the largest genus of the familia Piperaceae with more than 1000 species. This plant is widely used and has high commercial value because of its essential oil contents. Essential oils are plant secondary metabolites which is volatile and aromatic. The difference in essential oil contents in plants has contributed to its taxonomic position. In the previous study there are differences in the essential oils profile of 10 Piper species both qualitatively and quantitatively. However, the materials used in this study are not from plants of the same age, thus its variation in the essential oils profile might not be caused by genetic factors.
