One way to improve rice production, the most important cash crop in Indonesia, is increasing the potential of superior cultivars. New plant type (NPT) rice, introduced by IRRI, is an ideotipe which is characterized by medium tiller number (8-10 tillers) but all are productive. This characteristic is now being introduced to �Ciherang�, one of the most popular cultivar in Indonesia, and is expected to raise spikelet number per panicle.
