HUBUNGAN ANTARA STATUS KARIES GIGI DENGANKUALITAS HIDUP TERKAIT KESEHATAN MULUT PADA LANJUT USIA DI PANTI WREDHA SWASTA KOTA YOGYAKARTA

The growth of the elderly population in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta Province, are exceed the growth of other age groups. As the increasing of the age, decline in organ function and physical changes occur and increase diseases and disability. The major dental health problems in the elderly are dental caries and tooth loss due to dental caries. This problems may cause changes in their oral health -related quality of life that covers physical, functional, social, and emotional aspects. This study aimed to identify the relationship between dental caries status and oral health -related quality of life of the elderly in private nursing homes in the city of Yogyakarta. This research uses a cross-sectional design. Subjects were 52 elderly people aged 60 years and over who live in private nursing homes in the city of Yogyakarta. Each subject was interviewed about the oral health -related quality of life using corresponding questionnaires Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and dental caries status was measured using the DMF-T instrument. Hypothetical measurement conducted using Pearson-Product moment correlation with 95% confidence level. The results showed that 30.8% elderly had moderate dental caries status and 50% had poor dental caries status. 98.1% of the elderly had poor quality of life and no one has a better quality of life. Correlation test showed a significant relationship between dental caries status and oral health -related quality of life of the elderly in private nursing homes in the city of Yogyakarta ( r = -0.91
