for the development of downstream industry. One of the downstream industries of palm oil is a transparent soap. The purpose of this study is the optimization formula making transparent soap from palm oil for hardness using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). In this study design used Box-Behnken experiment 3 factors and 3 levels to determine the optimum value of transparent soap formula with factors: the concentration of NaOH, the ratio of stearic acid: crude palm oil and soapstock ratio: 70% ethanol. The results of observations and calculations show that the optimum conditions for a transparent soap formula made from palm oil is to a) 6.69M NaOH concentration, b) the ratio of stearic acid: 4.75g palm oil: 100g and c) ratio of 70% ethanol soapstock is 10g : 16.15 g with the predicted value of 5.84 mm of hardness. Verification results obtained hardness value of 5.4 mm. When compared with commercial transparent soap transparent soap was produced from this research transparent soap with the hardness and transparency is still low
