THE ROLES OF JAVANESE WOMEN IN LIVELIHOOD STRATEGY ON LAHARS DISASTER AFTER MERAPI ERUPTION 2010 IN PABELAN RIVERBANK, MAGELANG

Disasters can change the people's life and their family life with a change in their asset or the capability to access these assets. Women including children and the elderly are the group that had a higher susceptibility when compared with men when have to face the same pressure from the disaster. Even so, women have their own way to deal with the disaster. Social system where in the women live, gives the influence to women's role for their family livelihood strategies. Pabelan society as a representation of the Javanese community suffered catastrophic lahars disaster shocks that occurred after the eruption of Merapi Volcano in 2010. Women in Pabelan society give their contribution to the sustainability of their family life under these conditions. However, in practice they have been contributed to the productive activities of their family since long time ago. The roles of women in Pabelan community were analyzed using the SLA Framework and Intrahousehold Disadvantages Framework. Data collected by the primary method (observation, in depth-interviews, transect walk, documentation) and secondary methods as literature study. The data focuses on the activities of women in their contribution to their family livelihood strategy choice in disaster conditions. Nonetheless, this study provides an overview of the role of women to the livelihood strategy options before and after the disaster. The results showed that the women take contribution to their family livelihood strategy choices with the variety of activities including unpaid productive activities, have own business, working in the sector for agricultural, mining of sand and stone, as well as a casual labourer. These options do not change significantly in the context before and after the disaster. Participation of women in the choice of this strategy is influenced by factors that social systems of Javanese community (matrifocality system that works on the patrilineal/patriarchy), the conditions and circumstances, changes in assets, disaster management programs, as well as the natural character of the woman
