The study was motivated by the degradation of moral consciousness in our society, especially in the politic and Indonesian government bureaucracy in recent times. Various anomalies and immorality, such as a corruption, which has become a negative �cultural norm�, seem very difficult to be controlled. The condition of national spirit and morality suggested the need of redevelopment of model of character education (character building) as a national healing. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to explore ideas and inspirations from the thought of Imam Zarkasyi, the founder of Gontor Modern Islamic Boarding School, with an analysis made from the perspective of moral philosophy of Ibn Miskawaih, the main Islamist scholar in the field of philosophy of moral. of a schol This study is a literature research about the thought ar with an analysis made in terms of philosophy of moral, especially the theory of Islamic moral education propounded by Ibn Miskawaih. The steps to study begat at data inventory, classification, interpretation, analysis, compilation, and drawing the last conclusions. The elements of method used for analysis include, among others, historical method, hermeneutics, content analysis, and induction. research Based on the , the author found that Imam Zarkasyi implemented several principles of character building in his modern education at Darussalam Gontor Modern Islamic Boarding School. He taught his pupils on the basis of the virtues of the Excellencies with refer to the Five Souls (Panca Jiwa) of Pesantren and the Four Mottos of Modernity as the living values. Those principles essentially are application of the principle of the Golden Mean as in the concept of the Excellencies of Ibn Miskawaih. He arranges them favorably in the context of contemporary Islamic education. His reformative efforts to change the traditional system and the classical method, and to integrate the modern curriculum, are actually intended to the development of character, in other words, �character building�. Some aspects of Zarkasyi�s principles of education that might be supportive for developing the national character education program, and still relevant for today are: first, moral education should have the leadership insight
