PERKEMBANGAN MORFOLOGI KAWASAN PERCABANGAN SUNGAI, TEPIAN SUNGAI KAPUAS, KOTA PONTIANAK Kasus: Kawasan Tanjungpura, Kampung Beting Dan Kawasan Siantan

Waterfront cities normally rooted from various geographical and historical factors affecting the inland architecture, which have been used as the basis for the urban development oriented towards specific spatial arrangements and water-based circulations. In some regions, river is the arterial route for urban community�s life, that has grown hereditary in Kalimantan. Basically, cities in Kalimantan grow and develop from the settlements along the riverbanks their embryos. However, cities in Kalimantan currently tend to grow rapidly, and less attention have been given to the role of riverfront as their potentials, so that the development tend to be more mainland-oriented. Geographically, Pontianak City is located strategically on the branching of two rivers that connect the hinterland of Kalimantan region and the the urban areas. The study describes the morphology of the core area of Pontianak on the branching of the two rivers. This area has a unique characteristics as waterfront city in Indonesia, especially in West Kalimantan. The method used in this study is synchronic and diachronic development analysis to explain the sequence and periods of development, both the network and the urban structure. It is concluded that Pontianak formed fragmented due to geographical aspects tebetuknya great influence on the region, in addition to factors related to the social-cultural, political, and economic. The recommendations of this research is to develop the city with both bases, i.e inland-based and river-based development with the main canal system as the core of the urban structures
