MODELLING AND ANALYSIS OF THE BUS PRIORITY IMPLEMENTATION USING AIMSUN v6.1 (A Case Study: Condong Catur Intersection at Northern Ring-Road of Yogyakarta Province)

Bus is expected to play an important role in providing a reliable travel in congested conditions. Therefore, it has been widely studied to minimize the travel time and delay of the bus by proposing bus priority scheme to increase the attractiveness of the public transport against the private vehicles. Signal timing optimization combined with the bus priority scheme are discussed in this research as the alternatives to improve the intersection performances. Further, identifying the effects of these alternatives towards the general vehicles and public transport system performances were the aims of this research as well. This research is carried out by observing and simulating the traffic condition of Condong Catur intersection. AIMSUN as simulations tool were used to predict the traffic condition due to bus priority implementation. Bus Signal Priority Control (BSPC) and bus advance area with pre-signal methods, which combined with signal timing optimization, were the proposed bus priority schemes. Based on the existing and alternatives simulation result, the general vehicles performance will be compared in terms of travel time, delay and queue, while the public system performance will be compared in terms of travel time and delay. These comparison aims to determine the best alternative for Condong Catur intersection. The result of this research shows that the highest reduction of the travel time, delay and queue reduce by 25%, 26%, 7% consecutively for the BSPC method and 28%, 30%, 8% consecutively for the bus advance area method at East approach. For the public transport system performance, the BSPC method unsignificant reduce the travel time and delay for routes 2A and 3A by 11%, 23% and 14% , 0% respectively , yet it increases the travel time and delay for route 3B by 28% and 63%. For the bus advance area method, route 2A experienced reduction value of travel time and delay by 23% and 25%, while the other routes have no experience an impact of bus priority, since the reduction values are unsignificant. According to these comparisons, bus advance area with pre-signal method is proposed as the best alternative due to its impact to reduce the bus travel times and delay without degrading the other vehicles performance
