PENGARUH SORTIMEN DAN KUALITAS KAYU DALAM TINDAKAN SILVIKULTUR (The Effect of Wood Dimensions and Quality on Silvicultural Practices)

The productivityof Indonesian forest such as natural tropical rain forest and industrial plantation forest (I-ITI)is relativelylow . The HTI program is on the right track when the target final utilizationis for energy,fibersandconstructionpurposes.The unsuccessfulprogramandthe failureof maintaining the sustainability of natural forest are brought about by so many complex factors including the New Order Era system. The right amendment might be started from' the technical aspects, however, the behavior of the operators and ofticials might be the worst. It is proposed to change the technical corrections by involving the output orientation Wood dimensions and quality are the two important parameters for wood processing industries. Matching the silvicultural practices and the output orientations requires some reorientation by thinking silvicultural actions on the other way around. The current wood dimensions and quality needed by all national wood industries should be inventoried. The same technique is used for data gathering of the global situation on wood industries.. This reorientation will provide guidence for the silvicultural development and implementation tor producing high productivity of Indonesian forests. For the time being, the national wood industries are oriented to more plywood product. This needs logs with wood specific gravities ranging from 0.3 to 0.8, and minimal log diameter of 60cm. If the trend of wood processing is toward composition boards basis, then all forms ofIogs could be utilized and wood specific gravity as low as 0.1 could be used. The international wood industries in many countries such as in Japan and United States have been utilizing all lignocellulosic wastes such as agricultural and plantation wastes for producing composition boards. The high strength wood can be fulfilled by lamination or adhesion technique. The new products of Super Strength Timber of Japan will substitute the solid wood in the future.
