ASPEK-ASPEK REHABILITASI HUTAN HUJAN TROPIS PASCA KEBAKARAN (Rehabilitation Aspects in Tropical Rain Forest After Fire Incidence)

Tropical rain forest in East Kalimantan as in other parts oflndonesia has been exploited mechanically since 1970s. The government has geared up the exploitation by introducing Indonesian Selective Logging (TPI) later on modified as Indonesian Selective Logging and Planting (TPTI). Despite of this, the overall environment and its biodiversity richness ofthis tropical rain forest have been under heavy threat since then. Simultaneously, the development of timber estate by converting multi-species unevenaged forest into short rotation of fast-growing plantation progress in a considerably rapid rate. These both developments were further worsened with frequent forest fire throughout the region. More than 5 million ha of forest and land fire was reported. There are some undergoing silvicultural etlorts to improve the trop'ical rain forest cultivation after fire incidence. Meanwhile, the potential degradation of man made forest productivity has been considerably ignored unresearched. Replanting and rehabilitation of this forest will indeed determine the future of our forest where in silvicultural aspect has a very important role. However, a comprehensive approache needs to be implemented.
