It has been known that out of 144 million ha offorestland in Indonesia, some ofthem have suffered from deforestation. land degradation. and stand impoverishment. The wood production ofnaturaJ forest is reasonably low and its potential to meet wood demand has been declining steadily. The program for developing plantation forest (HTI) began in 1980s with the objective of reducing the pressure to the existing natural forest. It is apparent that the HTI project has not met the target in terms of size and productivity. Indonesia has a long experience with long-rotation plantation, such as teak (feetana granJis) and Pinus merkusii, particularly in Java.
