PEMBENTUKAN IDENTITAS KOLEKTIF MELALUI MUSIK DALAM KOMUNITAS JAZZ YOGYAKARTA

Jazz is a dynamic music genre, which has typically been closely connected to discourse of grass-roots resistance. Despite having been born from a sense of oppression in most parts of the world, in its development in Indonesia, jazz has become a musical style, which has largely been consumed by the elite. As a result, discourse on jazz as the music of the elite is only just developing and can only be heard by certain groups and in certain places. The focus of this study is about the formation of collective identity through jazz that is happening in the Yogyakarta Jazz Community. Its aims are a) to spell out the knowledge about jazz music, which was understood by the Yogyakarta Jazz Community, b) to explain the practice that underlie the formation of collective identity within Yogyakarta Jazz Community, and c) to describe about usage of knowledge and power that reproduced discourse about jazz. This study uses the theory of habitus, identity, and discourse to sharpen the analysis. Meanwhile, the type of this research is qualitative interpretive and interview, observation and documents were used as a method. The presence of Yogyakarta Jazz Community opens a new space for jazz and make it more well-known. Jazz can be enjoyed freely by Yogyakarta Jazz Community as they express themselves through the jam-session in their own language, as well as injecting their shows with local elements. These practices have helped to forge their own collective identity
