ABSTRACT: The contribution of kaolin to phosphate adsorption by some Indonesian red soils from Java and Sumatra is investigated in this research. Soil kaolin was concentrated from the clay fraction by removal of iron oxides in buffered dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate solution. P sorption measurements were carried out by shaking 100 mg of soil kaolin in 20 ml 0.2 M KCI containing 0-10 mgP ml-`, centrifuging and determining P concentration in the supernatant by the molybdate blue method. The mineralogical composition of the clay fraction was surprisingly uniform with kaolin group minerals (generally b-axis disordered kaolinite) being dominant.
