ABSTRACT The paper examines the impact of population growth on deforestation and climatic variations in Mid-Western Nigeria. Population data, forest area coverage and climatic data were collected for 30 years (1971-2000). These were computed and the result shows that: population figure doubled within this period, rising from 3.01 million to 6.08 million with an annual growth rate of 3.4%. This has led to a reduction of forest area front 6347.8 km2 in 1971 to 1712.3 km2 in 2000. Total .area deforested stood at 4635.5 km2 with annual mean deforestation of 154.4 km2 representing 2.43% and afforestation of only 21. 66 km2. The projection shows that should the deforestation rate continue, the natural forest may not survive the year 2020. The com...
