ABSTRACT Women in the Himalayan Region are a backbone of the natural economy. An attempt has been made to evaluate the hardship of the rural woman. Total 136 sample women from the 14 sample villages located in different geophysical divisions in the Central Himalaya (Uttarakhand) have been selected for the detailed study. Women of this rural based region are busy since early morning to late night. Presently majority of women spend more than 15 hours daily while years back their mother spend half of this time for the same. Consequently 42.54% of the total surveyed women fall under the grip of moderate to severe mal-nutrition. As a result of malnutrition mothers gave birth to low weight babies.
