Municipal wastewater residuals or sludge must be managed in responsible ways, and not directly released into a stream system or watershed aquatic system. Research to date found that sludge contained not only organic matter and plant nutrition but also some toxic compound and heavy metal. These toxic constituents may adversely affect watershed aquatic system that, in turn, will reduce quality of drinking water, fish and wildlife production, crop production, and water based recreation. Because of its high nutrient and organic matter content, there will be a big opportunity to utilize sludge as fertilizer especially for forest land.
