Ethnoagricultural knowledge on the brink of disappearing: the case of a community in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo inventariar el conocimiento etnoagrícola de una comunidad de la Mata Atlántica en Brasil. Se hicieron entrevistas a 20 personas que aún tienen relación con el uso de las plantas. Todos hacían plantío de roça en el pasado, actividad que relatan haber abandonado debido a cambios en las leyes ambientales, actividades turísticas y falta de tierra para plantío. Todavía existe una rica memoria etnoagrícola basada en el manejo tradicional de las plantas y el suelo y en la observación de la naturaleza. Sin embargo, estos conocimientos están desapareciendo rápidamente a pesar de su alto valor socioambiental y su reconocido patrimonio biocultural tangible e intangible.This paper aims to survey ethnoagricultural knowledge by a community living in an area of Atlantic tropical rainforest in Brazil. Interviews were conducted to 20 persons who are still related to the use of plants. All of them had cultivated roças in the past, activity they reported to have abandoned due to changes in environmental law, tourism activities and lack of land for planting. There is still a rich ethnoagricultural memory based on the traditional practices of cultivation of plants, management of the land, and the observation of nature. However, this knowledge is rapidly disappearing albeit its high socioenvironmental value and its recognized tangible and intangible biocultural heritage
