El principal problema asociado a las invasiones vegetales en los ecosistemas terrestres es la pérdida de biodiversidad en el área amenazada. Muchos de los estudios realizados sobre diferentes ecosistemas se han basado en las relaciones de competencia por recursos entre la flora autóctona y la alóctona prestándose menor atención a la interferencia entre las especies. En esta revisión se repasan aspectos que pueden estar favoreciendo la capacidad invasora de las especies exóticas como la importancia de la alelopatía en el proceso invasivo, los diferentes compuestos químicos que intervienen como aleloquímicos, ó los efectos que el proceso alelopático tiene sobre la actividad fisiológica de las especies receptoras, los microorganismos del suelo...
