Conrad Gesner, i Loci Communes dello pseudo Massimo Confessore e la Melissa del monaco Antonio

The Konrad Gesner’s editions of the Loci Communes by pseudo Maximus Confessor and of the Melissa by Antonius monk, both published in 1546, were for a long time a point of reference for scholars interested in florilegia. The editorial approach of Gesner has been strongly criticized by philologists, because of his textual manipulations. For understanding the reasons of these manipulations, we have to consider the circumstances: according to the general economic situation, Gesner had to publish a cheap edition of the anthologies, and for this reason he shortened the texts. This kind of manipulation was not regrettable to the readers of the time, whom were used to Moreover, Gesner accomplished these editions and the Bibliotheca Universalis and the Pandectae at the same time. In this way, Gesner concentrated himself on the structure of the anthologies, which were divided in loci or chapters, not on their texts. The textual organization of the florilegia inspired Gesner for his classification system, fully developed in the Pandectae. From Gesner’s point of view the anthologies were a sort of catalogues, not literary works and that is the reason why he was not afraid to manipulate the texts. In the end: the Gesner’s editions are not acceptable for philologists and they are quite useless to know the true text of these byzantine anthologies. On the other hand, they are fundamental for understanding the evolution of the Gesner’s idea of Bibliography and semantic classification.Le edizioni gesneriane dei Loci Communes dello pseudo Massimo Confessore e della Melissa del monaco Antonio, apparse congiuntamente nel 1546, hanno rappresentato per lungo tempo uno dei massimi punti di riferimento per gli studiosi di florilegistica sacro-profana. Il metodo adottato da Gesner per tali pubblicazioni, tuttavia, è stato oggetto di aspre e fondate critiche: i processi manipolatori e riduttivi a cui il tigurino sottopose i testi dei due florilegia bizantini dettero origine ad una pubblicazione filologicamente inaccettabile. Onde comprendere le ragioni di tale condotta, insolita anche per l’epoca, sono da considerare le circostanze tanto storiche quanto personali in cui Gesner operò. Dal punto di vista storico, l’elvetico pubblicò le antologie in un momento in cui alte erano le necessità degli editori di comprimere le spese. A ciò si aggiungeva il gusto di un pubblico di lettori che aveva dimostrato già in altre occasioni di non giudicare negativamente le manipolazioni testuali. Sul piano personale, invece, il tigurino si trovò a lavorare sulle edizioni florilegistiche negli stessi anni in cui approntava la Bibliotheca Universalis e le Pandectae. Tale sovrapposizione lo portò a concentrarsi non tanto sul contenuto testuale delle sillogi bizantine, quanto sulla loro strutturale suddivisione per loci. Grazie a questa architettura testuale Gesner legò i florilegia alla sua riflessione teoretica sulla classificazione delle discipline, riconoscendo a queste opere una natura non letteraria, bensì catalogatoria e ordinatrice dell’umano sapere. Se così considerate, le edizioni delle due antologie – comprensibilmente inadatte per un uso filologico – si rivelano fondamentali per meglio comprendere alcuni momenti chiave della riflessione bibliografica gesneriana sulla teoria dei loci
