Gli Art Toys nel panorama artistico contemporaneo

The Art Toys phenomenon, better known as Art Toy Movement, was born in China in the mid-nineties and quickly spread out to the rest of the world. The toys are an artistic production of serial sculpture, made by handcrafts or on an industrial scale. There are several types of toys, such as custom toys and canvas toys, synonyms of designer toys, although they are often defined according to the constituent material, such as vinyl toys (plastic) and plush toys (fabric). Art toys are the heirs of an already pop-surrealist and neo-pop circuit, which since the eighties of the twentieth century has pervaded the Japanese-American art scene, winking to the playful spirit of the avant-garde of the early century. Some psychoanalytic, pedagogical and anthropological studies about “play theories”, may also help us to understand and identify these heterogeneous products as real works of art and not simply as collectible toys.Il fenomeno degli Art Toys, meglio conosciuto come Art Toy Movement, nasce alla metà degli anni Novanta in Cina, diffondendosi ben presto nel resto del mondo. I toys sono una produzione artistica di scultura seriale, realizzata sia a livello artigianale che industriale. Ne esistono varie tipologie, quali i custom toys e i canvas toys, sinonimi di designer toys, anche se spesso vengono definiti a seconda del materiale costituente, come ad esempio i vinyl toys (in plastica) e i plush toys (in stoffa). Gli art toys sono eredi di un circuito già pop-surrealista e neo-pop, che fin dagli anni Ottanta del Novecento ha pervaso la scena artistica giappo-americana, strizzando l’occhio allo spirito ludico avanguardistico di inizio secolo. Alcuni studi psicoanalitici, pedagogici e antropologici sulle “teorie del gioco” possono inoltre aiutarci a capire e a identificare queste produzioni eterogenee come delle vere e proprie opere d’arte, e non dei semplici giocattoli da collezione.
