Papel do transporte ferroviário na suburbanização da Zona Oeste

This paper aims to analyze how the suburban area of ​​the western zone of Rio de Janeiro was historically constituted, aiming at identifying the processes that result in the integration of this region into the suburban system of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The region is usually considered, in historical perspective, as a part of the suburban zone of the Central Railway of Brazil and, thus, we seek to establish the relations over time of the evolution of the railway branch of Santa Cruz with the spatial processes that were constituted in the areas served by this railway.O trabalho procura abordar como se constituiu historicamente o espaço suburbano da zona oeste carioca, objetivando identificar os processos que resultam na integração desta região ao sistema de subúrbios da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. A região é usualmente considerada, na perspectiva histórica, como uma parcela da zona suburbana da Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil e, assim, buscamos estabelecer as relações ao longo do tempo da evolução do ramal ferroviário de Santa Cruz com os processos espaciais que se constituíram nas áreas servidas por essa via férrea
