Germany's power and its employment in the sub-Saharan Africa region

The main topic of this Master’s thesis is the position of the Federal Republic of Germany in contemporary international relations. Its position is analysed with a focus on its power potential. The concepts of power – soft, hegemonic, and civilian – serve as theoretical parts of the research. The aim of this thesis is to map the power potential of Germany in contemporary international relations and to apply this knowledge to its position in the sub-Saharan Africa region. Conclusion of the thesis is that the power potential of Germany is high (i.e. due to the strength of economy or representation in international institutions). Furthermore, the thesis concludes that Germany employs all three concepts of power in the sub-Saharan Africa region. German power is not typically anchored in a strong army, possession of nuclear weapons or membership in the UN Security Council as traditional great powers, on the contrary, it is rather an economic and civilian power which creates possibilities to Germany, for instance in the sub-Saharan Africa region.Ústředním tématem této diplomové práce je postavení Spolkové republiky Německo (SRN) v současných mezinárodních vztazích. Její postavení je analyzováno se zaměřením na mocenský potenciál, kdy základními východisky pro zkoumání jsou koncepty moci – měkká, hegemonická a civilní. Cílem této práce je zmapovat mocenský potenciál SRN v současných mezinárodních vztazích a aplikovat získané poznatky na působení SRN v regionu subsaharské Afriky. Ze závěrů práce vyplývá, že mocenský potenciál SRN je vysoký (např. díky síle ekonomiky či zastoupení v mezinárodních institucích) a že v regionu subsaharské Afriky uplatňuje všechny tři koncepty moci. Pro německou moc není typická silná armáda, vlastnictví jaderných zbraní nebo členství v RB OSN jako u tradičních velmocí, naopak je spíše mocí ekonomickou a civilní, což SRN otevírá dveře mj. v regionu subsaharské Afriky
