The comparison of postcolonial development in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire as former British and French colonies

Colonialism is a phenomenon in the history of international relations, the effects of which have been evident to the present day. During the colonial era, Africa was divided among European colonial powers. However, after African states declared independence on their colonizers, they continued to experience colonial heritage in their further development. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate post-colonial development in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire as former colonies of Great Britain, resp. France. In the context of British and French colonial approach, the aim is to assess the development of selected indicators from the political, economic and social spheres of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. The selection of the indicators is considering the fact that the colonization process has affected and influenced further development of both countries after the independence declaration. The first chapter, as a theoretical-methodological base, defines the indicators of comparison and briefly characterizes the colonial approach of Great Britain and France with an emphasis on their similarities and differences. The second chapter analyzes the development of indicators in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire with regard to the impact of the respective colonial approach. The third chapter compares post-colonial development in these countries. The comparison takes into consideration the influence of colonialism and the different practices of the European colonial powers. The similarities and differences of development after gaining independence are looked into in the same chapter through selected indicators in economic, political and social area.Kolonialismus je v dějinách mezinárodních vztahů fenomén, jehož dopady jsou patrné až do současnosti. Během koloniální éry byla mezi evropské mocnosti rozdělena i Afrika. Poté, co africké státy vyhlásily na svých kolonizátorech nezávislost, se však v jejich dalším vývoji i nadále setkávaly s koloniálním dědictvím. Cílem diplomové práce je zhodnotit post-koloniální vývoj v Ghaně a Pobřeží slonoviny jako bývalých kolonií Velké Británie, resp. Francie. S přihlédnutím k britskému a francouzskému koloniálnímu přístupu je tedy cílem posoudit vývoj vybraných ukazatelů z politické, ekonomické a sociální oblasti v Ghaně a Pobřeží slonoviny, do kterých zasáhl proces kolonizace a které zároveň ovlivnily další vývoj obou zemí po získání nezávislosti. První kapitola jako teoreticko-metodologické východisko definuje jednotlivé indikátory komparace a stručně charakterizuje koloniální přístup Velké Británie a Francie s důrazem na jejich podobnosti a odlišnosti. Ve druhé kapitole je analyzován vývoj jednotlivých indikátorů v Ghaně a v Pobřeží slonoviny s ohledem na dopad příslušného koloniálního přístupu. Třetí kapitola porovnává post-koloniální vývoj v těchto zemích a s ohledem na vliv kolonialismu a odlišné praktiky evropských koloniálních mocností hledá tato kapitola podobnosti a odlišnosti ve vývoji příslušných afrických zemí po získání nezávislosti v oblasti ekonomické, politické a sociální pomocí vybraných indikátorů
