The Strategic Defense Initiative and its impact on the US

This thesis deals with one of the most popular programs of President Ronald Reagan, Strategic defense initiative. Its aim is to verify that SDI had a significant impact on the economic development of the United States of America, while also it affected international developments, especially the US relationship with the USSR. The thesis includes a necessary analysis of the difference between the economic concepts of Reagan and his predecessors, focusing on the implementation of the SDI program and the involvement of selected private companies. At the same time, the impact of SDI on technologies, especially the development of lasers, is analyzed. The US economy expanded in Reagan’s period, among other reasons thanks to a fall in oil prices. The SDI did not provide a significant impact on the labor market, although the program employed new scientists and researchers, whether in the public, or private spheres. SDI funding was relatively costly, so it can be argued that the US could have invest more efficiently. The most positive impact of the program was on mentioned technologies, which also increased US competitiveness on the foreign market. In conclusion the thesis describes SDI as one of the factors that helped to win the US in the Cold War over the Soviet Union.Práce se zabývá výzkumem jednoho z nejpopulárnějších programů prezidenta R. Reagana Strategickou obrannou iniciativou. Jejím cílem je ověření, že SDI měla významný vliv na hospodářský vývoj Spojených států amerických, a zároveň také ovlivnila mezinárodní vývoj, zejména pak vztah USA se SSSR. Práce zahrnuje nutnou analýzu rozdílu mezi hospodářskými koncepcemi R. Reagana a jeho předchůdců, zaměřuje se na průběh zavádění programu SDI a zapojení vybraných soukromých firem. Zároveň je v práci analyzován dopad SDI na technologie, především pak vývoj laserů. Americké hospodářství za R. Reagana expandovalo, mimo jiné i díky poklesu cen ropy. SDI se výrazně neprojevilo na trhu práce, byť program zaměstnal nové vědce a výzkumníky, ať již ve veřejné či soukromé sféře. Financování SDI bylo poměrně nákladné, a proto lze oponovat, že USA mohly finance investovat efektivněji. Nejpozitivnější dopad měl program právě na zmíněné technologie, které zvýšily svou konkurenceschopnost i na zahraničním trhu. Na závěr, práce označuje SDI jako jeden z faktorů, které napomohly k vítězství USA ve studené válce nad Sovětským svazem
