Humanitarian intervention and Indonesia: conflict in East Timor and Aceh

This diploma thesis studies the topic of massive abuse of human rights and humanitarian intervention in Indonesia. By analyzing the conflicts in East Timor and Aceh, it claims that the humanitarian crises in Indonesia were overlooked by the world powers from the most part. Indonesian government and army, responsible for the abuse of human rights, tended to deny the real humanitarian situation and to isolate the regions in times of the worst abuses. The international community, mostly the Western world, supported Indonesia instead of intervening in the name of human rights throughout the Cold War and the years after, only consenting to humanitarian intervention in East Timor in 1999 and providing humanitarian relief to Aceh after the tsunami of 2004.Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá masivním porušováním lidských práv v Indonésii a konceptem humanitární intervence. Postupně jsou analyzovány konflikty ve Východním Timoru a v Acehu, kde indonéská armáda se svolením vlády byla zodpovědná za masivní porušování lidských práv vedoucí k humanitární krizi, jejíž vážnost Indonésie popírala a snažila se konflikty izolovat. V práci je dále analyzován postoj mezinárodního společenství ke konfliktům a jejich činnost či nečinnost. V období studené války i v dalších letech byla situace převážně přehlížena, v případě Východního Timoru pak bylo rozhodnuto o humanitární intervenci v roce 1999 a v případě Acehu o poskytnutí humanitární pomoci po tsunami 2004
