Impact of Euro currency on the economic crisis that emerged in 2009

The main topic of this diploma thesis is to analyze the impact of Euro currency existence on the economic crisis that emerged in 2009. The Eurozone itself is challenged by the Euro convergence criteria based on the theory of R. Mundell, R. McKinnon and P. Kennen in the optimum currency areas. Thesis results show that the Euro area does not comply with the convergence criteria for the optimal monetary zone. The theory suggests that it might cause additional costs from the absence of leverage powers of the exchange rate and independent monetary policy. As a result, it might be the case that eventual cost for having Euro currency could exceed the benefits. The model uses the Fixed Effects regression method on the panel data and presents the results as the incremental effect of having euro in the period when the economies have declined. The positive effect has been found in the year of 2009 and 2010, the negative one in 2011. Besides Eurozone area, hypothetical the author suggests setting a new set of monetary zones. The one where the convergence criteria are met connects particular countries from West-Central Europe, Baltics and Balkans.Diplomová práce analyzuje vliv eura na průběh hospodářské krize započaté v roce 2009. Eurozóna je podrobena testování dle kritérií teorie optimálních měnových oblastí autorů R. Mundella, R. McKinnona a P. Kenena. V práci je zjištěno, že euro oblast nesplňuje podmínky pro optimální měnovou zónu, což dle teorie může způsobit dodatečné náklady ze ztráty kurzového vyrovnávacího mechanismu a vlastní měnové politiky, přičemž náklady mohou v případě asymetrického šoku převýšit výnosy ze společné měny. Na panelových datech metodou fixních efektů je proveden regresní odhad těchto nákladů interpretovaný jako inkrementální efekt eura v období hospodářského poklesu. Vliv společné měny na průběh hospodářské krize byl pozitivní v roce 2009 a 2010, negativní v roce 2011. V práci je vedle eurozóny proveden návrh hypotetických měnových zón, z nichž kritéria pro optimální měnovou oblast splňují uskupení středozápadní Evropy, Pobaltí a Balkánského poloostrova
