The process of unification of Cyprus in the context of the european integration progress

The main goal of my bachelor thesis was to find out how the interest of Cyprus in entering the European Union has influenced the possibility of its unification. In the first chapter I am concerned with the history of this island and also its geographical location which has had a great effect on its affairs in the past. Especially important is the beginning of the Turkish reign on Cyprus because during this time the Cypriot conflict between Greeks and Turks has arisen. In the second chapter of my thesis I describe closely the state system of Cyprus, its economic situation and the difference between Greek and Turkish parts of the island. The third chapter deals with the relationship of Cyprus to the European Union and with the changes of the Cypriot conflict which were caused by the submission of Cyprus among the candidate countries. In the fourth chapter of my thesis I focus on the present development of negotiations between the two parties and I analyze the cause of the Cypriot dispute and possible problems that would have to be dealt with in the case of unification.Hlavním cílem mé bakalářské práce bylo zjistit, na kolik snaha Kypru vstoupit do Evropské unie napomohla procesu jeho sjednocení. V první části mé práce se zabývám především historií ostrova a také jeho geografickou polohou, která byla pro vývoj událostí na Kypru určující. Důležité je zejména období počátku nadvlády Turků, kdy na Kypru došlo ke zrodu řecko-tureckého konfliktu. V druhé části jsem se snažila přiblížit ostrov Kypr, jeho státní zřízení, ekonomickou situaci a rozdíl mezi řeckou a tureckou částí ostrova. Třetí část práce pojednává o vztahu Kypru a jeho dvou částí k Evropské unii. Přestože EU projevovala zájem na tom, aby se ostrov co nejdříve sjednotil, znamenalo kandidátství Kypru do EU spíše zkomplikování již tak dost složité situace na ostrově. Čtvrtá část mé práce se soustřeďuje na vývoj jednání mezi kyperskými Řeky a Turky v průběhu 20. a 21. století a také na momentální situaci. Analyzuji zde příčiny kyperského sporu a možné problémy, které by musely být řešeny v případě sjednocení
