The history of regional initiatives in Latin America is very rich and varied. Immediately after declaration of independence, there was a tendency to form a political union. Integration groupings developed in the twentieth century are trying with various success rate to enhance mutual trade and political ties in the region. These efforts can be divided into two periods, the first, the old regionalism, from the early sixties to the debt crisis in the eighties and the second period, the new regionalism from the turn of the eighties and nineties.
