Acute Oral Toxicity Test Of Azadirachta Indica Crude Extract Formulation On Sprague Dawley Rat (Rattus Norvegicus L.) (Preliminary Study)

The residues of chemical pesticide have chances to threaten applicator health and even their neighborhood. One of many substitution ways is by using pesticide which is yielded from natural resources such as plant. Azadirachtin, one of substances with pesticidal potential, comes from neem plant (Azadirachta indica) extraction that has been widely studied anddeveloped. Hence, we ca ried out preliminary study on acute oral toxicity of A. indica extract formulation which was yielded by research beforehand. Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) test guideline 420: Fixed Dose Procedure was adopted. The test materials were converted to 5000 mg/kg BW dose prior to application on Sprague Dawley rats. Single doses were orally inserted and its amount was adjusted to each body weight. Control group was treated as well as treatment groups with sterile destilated water. Mortality observations were conducted per hour in the 1st to 8th hours after exposure and continued per 24 hours in 14 days. Results showed 5000 mg/kgBW as single dose of formulation did not cause mortality. However, on the first three hours, rat experienced some clinical signs such as weakness, vibrating tail, and little cramp. The signs were happened for five hours before returning to normal.Hlm. 226-23
