The Management Of Tembawang By Indigenous People In The Village Of Sehe Lusur District Of Landak, West Kalimantan

In West Kalimantan, forest managed by local people, known as Tembawang has lasted for decades and generations. There are two types of Tembawang, i.e. Tomawankng Loom and Tomawankng Ompu. The Tomawakng Loom used to be cultivation areas, around the lodge in the fields and was used as the place to plant fruits on. Eventually this forest area formed vegetation that was dominated by fruit cropst. The second is Tomawakng Ompu. It is a former habitation of residences which was eventually abandoned and then this area was overgrown by garden plants such as ornamental plants, coconut, jackfruit and other fruits. Tembawang can maintain the forests in the region and other areas in West Kalimantan. However, the strength of land conversion such as for oil palm plantations and other uses makes the indigenous peoples of the region difficult to maintain the Tembawang. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways of indigenous peoplesin managing Tembawang these days. The object on this study was indigenous people in Sehe Lusur Village in Landak District, West Kalimantan. This study used the case study method with grounded research. Even though Tembawang has existed for generations, current management of Tembawang has not been done optimally. According to local sense, Tembawang is interpreted as a space or place left and contains fruit trees that are managed jointly. This means that the trees are privately owned while the land is a common property. The current generation maintains Tembawang in a simple way and only around their own trees especially in the fruit season. Due to Tembawang is a joint ownership; it is seen more on its social benefit of local knowledge and culture. Therefore, economic aspect of Tembawang is not a major benefit for their lives. Most of the indigenous people know that Tembawang has a great potency for community life and forest preservation. Their lack awaraness to the potency of Tembawang is due to the limitation of information about this potency. Indigenous people have high assesment toTembawang as local knowledge and socio-cultural benefits. Although the customs are unwritten regulation, these customs indirectly lead to the preservation of Tembawang since Tembawang can not be converted to other functions.
