[Abstract] Axial deformation of RC columns may make elongation under the strong compressive axial stress during strong motion earthquakes. In this paper, the experimental data are ezamined into the axial deformation with also into the axial stiffness of RC columns in the one bay portal frame specimen. The magnitude of alternately cyclic vertical loads applied on the specimen frames was the values from compressive 26% up to tensile 8% of axial column compressive strength
