The population of heterotrophic bacteria in the water of Uragami Bay, near the Cape of Shionomisaki on the Kii Peninsula, was studied for the 9 months from May 1992 to January 1993. The count of heterotrophic bacteria on the surface, middle, and bottom layers rose and remained high when the water temperature tended to rise, and fell when the water temperature cooled. The count of such bacteria in the deepest portion of the bay was generally higher than that in the center or mouth of the bay. The size of the population of heterotrophic bacteria and the water temperature were correlated (p<0.05) on the surface of the deep portion only.
