Cyanobacterial microbial mats play a key role in terrestrial polar ecosystems, representing hot spots of biological and diversity and primary production, and accumulating high standing-stocks of carbon. Here we present a review of how these communities are in the Antarctic Península, analysing their community, structure and other general characteristics that determine their functioning. Moreover, these communities are compared with those found in extreme environments within the Iberian Península (Spain), thus being able to highlight the main similarities and differences between these microecosystems, separated by more than 12,000 km.Los tapetes microbianos de cianobacterias desempeñan un papel esencial en los ecosistemas polares terres...
