Recently, the phosphatase substrate ELF97 phosphate (ELFP) has been employed to study the presence of extracellular phosphatases in different plankton populations in natural aquatic environments. Kinetic properties of ELFP hydrolysis by natural extracellular phosphatases are, however, mostly unknown.
