Designing Impact! Approaches to Applied Research

Practice-led design research is a constantly evolving area of the design process. This new publication, a collaboration between Sheffield Hallam University's Art and Design Research Centre (ADRC) and China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), showcases innovative approaches to design research through a series of exemplary practice-based case studies. The case studies included cross a range of design disciplines including product, furniture and interior design, visual communication and graphic design, interactive multimedia and software design, metalwork and jewellery (obviously close to Sheffield’s industrial heritage), craft and textiles. The wide variety of projects explored range from pioneering health care research to design work for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and from developing prosthetic arms to creating new eco-friendly construction materials from recycled glass waste. Aimed particularly at design students and early career designers, this book focuses on the design process, highlighting the different approaches and methodologies by designers in both institutions. It explores the context of design in industrial, community and regional settings and its social, cultural and economical impact. The book is translated into English and Chinese. This new venture builds on Sheffield Hallam's existing relationship with CAFA and reinforces our commitment to championing practice led design research.
