OME – ein Kraftstoff für den Dieselmotor der Zukunft?

The European Union's steadily tightening CO2 limits provide for a total elimination of greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector by 2050. Furthermore, there is a need for action to improve air quality, especially in urban areas. Technologies for low pollutant emissions are basically present, but still have to be established in the market. Thus, the reduction of CO2 emissions remains the main task of the powertrain devel-opment. These challenges call for the research and development of alternative propul-sion concepts and technologies to ensure climate-friendly and low-emission mobility in the future. The use of synthetic, CO2-neutral fuels is one way to ensure a climate-neutral and low-emission transport in the future. OME has repeatedly proven to be an excellent alter-native to conventional diesel fuel. The potential could already be demonstrated on the basis of various experimental setups on the engine testbeds as well as with the re-search vehicle at the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Powertrain Sys-tems. In this article, various paths to possible market introduction scenarios for OME are presented and discussed, as well as demonstrated by appropriate experimental inves-tigations of the institute
