A new test device called paperboard bulge test (PBT) has been used to investigate the quasi-plastic behaviour of paperboard. Test results showed good correlation with flow curves obtained by standard tensile tests. However, the multidimensional load in the bulge test always leads to a higher breaking strain. Finite element analyses (FEA) were validated against the test results and used to investigate the PBT in detail. The simulations explained the effect of a pre-load resulting from the clamping mechanism on the PBT results. Applicability of the finite element model for prediction of paperboard hydroforming behaviour was investigated. The simulation was able to predict mould filling accurately
