A new capacitive sensor concept for the monitoring of belt conveyor systems has been developed using a metamaterial transmission line with two operation modes. When the line is used as a resonator the mean permittivity and velocity of material on the sensor can be determined. In the second operation mode the sensor is used as a transmission line and by measuring the broadband input impedance in the LH band a capacitive profile along the line can be evaluated by applying different methods such as time domain reflectometry, the perturbation method or network synthesis.
