Objective: To discuss the association between microcephaly and intrauterine infection by Zika virus. Microcephaly occurs when a child is born with a head smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age. Known causes of microcephaly include congenital infections. The increase in the number of microcephaly cases in Northeast Brazil between October and November 2015, which coincided with the emergence of Zika virus in the country in May of the same year, led to the hypothesis of an association between microcephaly and intrauterine Zika virus infection.
