A busca por materiais mais eficientes gerou interesse em criar estruturas que permitam modificar as propriedades dos materiais utilizados. Materiais celulares têm sido uma opção inspirada em estruturas existentes na natureza, como tecidos ósseos e colmeias de abelhas. Em engenharia, os materiais celulares foram criados para se obter estruturas com a menor densidade possível, mantendo um nível de rigidez adequado aos esforços exigidos.
