The invention concerns a transmission for converting the reciprocating movement of pivoted levers (7), driven by pressure cylinders (14a, 14b), into an approximately continuous rotational movement. This conversion is brought about by a plurality of traction elements (2a, 12a, 2b, 12b), e.g. cables which are wrapped around a drum (13) and of which the ends are intermittently put under tension. The sense of rotation can be reversed by changing the ends put under tension. The transmission ratio can be continuously adjusted by varying the lever lengths or the point of application of the cylinder (5). Connecting the drums to wheels or a drive shaft produces a continuous vehicle transmission with optional forward or reverse travel
