Add to ORKGInland valleys cover some 22-52 million hectares in West Africa. In spite of their agricultural potential, they are used marginally. The large physical and biotic complexity and heterogeneity of inland valleys explain why little progress has been madein their systematic characterization. Building on a method for multi-scale agro-ecological characterization, this paper proposes a method for characterization at semi-detailed level (scales between 1 : 25 000 and 1 : 50 000), and provides examples and interpretations for two sites in different agro-ecological zones in Ivory Coast
