Maize has become a highly appreciated crop in Dutch dairy farming during the last 25 years. The current cropping technique, however, is associated with a low recovery of soil mineral nitrogen (N) and serious losses of N to the environment. This gave rise to the research described in this thesis which begins by reviewing the literature on the role of N in crop production, on N efficiency and on N losses ( Chapter 1) .
