Objective: to compare GPs' perception of their referral practice to Adult Mental Health services with Clinical Psychology's expectations of their referral practice in a small Clinical Psychology Department in the West of Scotland. Design and Subjects: face-to-face interviews with GPs referring to the Clinical Psychology Department and the Clinical Psychologist in the Department. Results: twelve out of 15 area GPs participated in the study. Three-quarters of GPs over-estimated the waiting list for Clinical Psychology. Five of these nine said they would refer more patients if there was no waiting list for Clinical Psychology.
