Article Abstract Writing Assignment

Course Code, Name, Level and Enrollment: ECO105Y, Introduction to Economics for Non-Specialists. first-year undergraduate, 500-1000 students.Learning outcomes: develop basic critical reading and analysis skills; form sound judgments as an active, informed citizen about economic issues of genuine personal interest; communicate a view or argument effectively to others.Assignment preparation: students read sample articles as models and watch two videos, "How to read critically" and "How to (re)write an abstract," in preparation for the assignment.Peer review: Students submit a draft of the abstract to peerScholar, an online peer review mechanism, in order to both give and receive feedback.Other notes: assignment description includes rubric.This assignment requires students to choose one article from a list of approved articles from The Economist, a popular and credible periodical that covers current events and economic issues in an informed yet accessible way, and to write an abstract for this chosen article as practice with critical reading, and in preparation for a longer assignment later in the semester (see Op-Ed Assignment, also in this collection)
