This paper explores some of the challenges that cultural institutions face in trying to stay relevant, integrated, and sustainable in an art world that is increasingly influenced by trends of rapid globalization and change. Where museums are publicly funded, there remains pressure to serve as national symbols, but such institutions are also increasingly held accountable to an ever more global and privatized art world and economy.
