A Catalogue of the Very Valuable and Extensive Library of Thomas Beddoes, 1809

Likewise all the late best German writers on the above subjects. Which will be sold by Auction, By Leigh and S. Sotheby, Booksellers, at their House, No. 145, Strand, opposite Catherine Street, On Friday, November 10, 1809, and Nine following Days, (Sundays excepted) at 12 o’Clock. [Sotheby 60 (2), annotated auctioneer’s copy in British Library (currently missing; there is a microfilm copy).] The auctioneer’s copy listed prices, which are omitted here. The total amount realized by the auction was £958 15s. The titles in Sotheby’s catalogue are often slightly and sometimes misleadingly wrong, often heavily abbreviated, sometimes given with place of publication, generally with date, but without identifying the publisher. The catalogue lists the lots (which may contain a single volume, a multi-volume set, a journal run, a collection of pamphlets, several book titles, a collection of theses, etc.) by the days in which they were sold, and within those days by format (quarto, octavo etc.) and without reference to alphabetical order. The first five days of the sale were devoted to 1,071 lots of German titles, and occasionally to Latin books by German authors. The final six days are broken down into Tracts and Pamphlets on the sixth day, and then and thereafter the lots are arranged for each day by format, and within each format are arranged in alphabetical order
