An embedded Network-on-Chip (NoC) has been proposed to augment the traditional, fine-grained FPGA interconnect with a fast and efficient system-level interconnect. This thesis aims to build the case for its inclusion by presenting complete applications that can benefit from a NoC-enhanced FPGA, and tools to facilitate their design. The applications chosen – network switches and packet processors – target Software-Defined Networking (SDN), a rapidly growing field in computer networks.
