The amounts and ecological importance of epiphytic litterfall has often been overlooked in forest ecosystem studies. However, epiphytes participate in whole-ecosystem dynamics by capturing and retaining nutrients from atmospheric sources, and transferring these nutrients to other ecosystem components.
